Natural lipids and silicones provide increased slip and shine to the hair.  Silicones seal the cuticle with a synthetic polymer film, making hair feel healthier, whereas plant-derived butter mimics the natural structural lipids within the hair, penetrating the hair and filling the internal cavity, making the hair softer, thicker, and more flexible.

These naturally derived lipids also inhibit tangles and knot formation, helping to keep hair fibres more aligned as the hair is combed, resulting in remarkably decreased breakage levels.

Afro-textured hair is associated with higher levels of hair breakage throughout the hair, making length retention difficult. This is because the peak combing force is typically found in the mid-lengths, whereas straighter hair is likelier to break at the ends. The mid-length peak force is caused by entanglements that accumulate under the comb, resulting in snags and pulling. Lab evaluations have demonstrated that up to 80% of broken hairs in black women are due to combing forces. Broken hairs accounted for drastically uneven lengths and the appearance of straggly ends.

In Afro hair, the hign combing force will cause internal fractures in the mid-section of the hair fibre.  Hair does not stretch until it breaks.  Instead, they are stretched, just a little, many times over and over until it breaks.  Fatigue data finds that reducing fatigue stresses markedly reduces damage.

The easiest way to consistently reduce combing forces is to keep hair well-lubricated with our Butter Balm. Our Butter Balm is designed to provide a consistent reduction in combing forces by effectively lubricating the hair.
